FP7 ERA-NET on Nanosafety
Safe Implementation of Innovative Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO)

Country: Spain

The Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) is in charge of funding basic and application oriented research projects as well as human mobility and research infrastructures through different specific programmes. According to the National Plan for Research, Development and Innovation for the period 2008-2011 (NP 2008-2011), MINECO launches yearly calls for proposals on basic research, which are not thematically oriented, and thus it does not presently execute a specific programme on nanoscience. However, the current interest in these topics can be well measured by the fact that one of the five Strategic Areas defined by the NP 2008-2011 is “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology”. Accordingly, the number of granted projects in nanoscience and technology has significantly increased during the last years: for the period 2007 - 2009, a total of 990 projects were funded with a total direct expenditure in excess of € 130 mio. (representing 10% of the total funded by MINECO for basic and application-oriented projects). Among the emerging topics in nanoscience and nanotechnologies already being supported by MINECO it is worth mentioning those aimed at following objectives: energy (mainly photovoltaics), the water resource, catalysers and controlled drug release.
The NP2008 - 2011 also funds actions to support the participation of Spanish researchers in international programmes, organisation of conferences and the creation of thematic networks. Some of these Spanish thematic networks bring together the most prominent groups in areas pertinent to the SIINN ERA-NET.
